When are topical corticosteroids recommended for scalp psoriasis?

A scalp preparation must reach the skin through hair. A clinician may choose a lotion, solution, foam, gel or another formulation rather than a thick ointment. The medicine reduces inflammation and can ease itch and scaling, but it does not eliminate psoriasis permanently. Thick scale may limit contact with the skin, so the plan may also include a scale-softening product.

Part the hair, place the prescribed medicine on the affected scalp rather than only on the hair, and use it at the stated frequency. Keep it away from the eyes and wash hands afterwards. Follow any instructions about washing, leave-on time and combining products. Do not scratch or pick thick scale, and avoid using extra amounts because the area feels difficult to cover. Tell the clinician if you have hair loss, broken skin or another scalp medicine.

Seek a review if pain, crusting, discharge, bleeding, marked hair shedding or worsening plaques develop. Prompt care is appropriate for fever, rapidly spreading redness, facial or eye involvement, or severe tenderness. If the medicine repeatedly helps only briefly, ask for a longer-term scalp plan rather than restarting it on your own.
