When are topical corticosteroids recommended for psoriasis?

These medicines reduce local inflammation, so redness, scaling and itch may settle. The suitable product depends on the plaque’s thickness and location. Skin on the face, folds and genital area is more delicate than skin on the elbows or knees, so a different strength or schedule may be needed. A corticosteroid controls a flare but does not remove the underlying tendency to develop psoriasis.

Apply only the prescribed amount to affected skin and follow the stated frequency and duration. Wash your hands after application unless your hands are being treated. Moisturiser can support the skin barrier, often after the medicine has had time to absorb. Do not cover treated areas with a tight dressing unless instructed, and do not extend treatment to clear skin without advice. Tell the prescriber about other creams, medicines and any previous reaction.

Arrange a review if plaques are spreading, cracking, bleeding, becoming painful or failing to improve with the prescribed plan. Seek prompt medical care for widespread redness, pus, fever, marked swelling or rapidly worsening skin. Stop and seek advice if the treated area develops severe irritation, unusual thinning or a new rash.
