When are topical corticosteroids recommended for nummular eczema?

Nummular eczema causes round or oval dry, scaly patches that can itch intensely and sometimes ooze before becoming crusted. A topical corticosteroid works on the inflammation in the skin, so it may be useful during an active flare. It is not a moisturiser and does not replace regular skin care. Ring-shaped rashes can have other causes, including a fungal infection, so diagnosis matters before starting an anti-inflammatory cream.

Use the prescribed corticosteroid exactly as directed and cover only the affected areas unless told otherwise. Moisturise frequently with a fragrance-free emollient, especially after washing, and choose short, lukewarm showers. Avoid fragranced products, harsh cleansers and picking at scale.
