When are topical corticosteroids recommended for nickel allergy?

Nickel allergy is a delayed contact reaction. Skin that touches jewellery, a watch, belt buckle, phone case, fastener or another nickel-containing item can become red, itchy, swollen, dry or blistered. A topical corticosteroid reduces local inflammation; it does not remove the allergy or make continued nickel exposure harmless. The choice of strength and formulation depends on the body site, the severity of the rash, the person’s age and whether the skin is broken.

Stop contact with the suspected item and gently wash the area if residue may remain. Use the prescribed product only on the advised skin and for the advised course; thin skin such as the face, eyelids, folds and genitals needs particular caution.
