When Are Topical Corticosteroids Recommended for Lichen Planus?

Lichen planus is an inflammatory skin condition that can cause itchy, purple-toned or reddish bumps, flat patches, or thicker plaques. Topical corticosteroids reduce local inflammation and may soften symptoms while the skin settles. The suitable product depends on whether the rash is on ordinary skin, the scalp, the mouth, or another sensitive area.

Do not assume every persistent purple or scaly rash is lichen planus. A clinician may need to examine the pattern and sometimes test a small sample of skin. Mouth sores, genital symptoms, scalp involvement, or nail changes deserve specific assessment because treatment and monitoring differ by site.

Apply the recommended medicine as a thin layer to active areas and follow the planned schedule. Avoid scratching, fragranced products, and harsh scrubbing. Moisturiser may help dryness, while cool compresses can ease itch. Do not place a skin product inside the mouth or use a strong product on thin skin unless your clinician has prescribed it for that location.

Keep follow-up appointments if the rash persists, returns, or leaves changing marks. Ask whether another treatment is needed when plaques are widespread or symptoms involve hair, nails, or mucosal tissue.

Arrange review for painful mouth ulcers, difficulty eating or drinking, genital pain, eye symptoms, scalp hair loss, or nail distortion. Seek prompt assessment if treated skin becomes increasingly painful, warm, swollen, or pus-filled. Urgent help is needed for sudden eye pain or vision changes.
