When are topical corticosteroids recommended for cheilitis?

Cheilitis means inflammation of the lips. It may involve dryness, scaling, cracking, soreness, or swelling. A corticosteroid can calm inflammation in some forms of lip dermatitis, but it is not suitable for every cause. Irritation from licking, a contact allergy, infection, or another lip disorder may require a different approach. Because the mouth is a sensitive area and the product can be swallowed, use only the formulation and duration chosen for the lips.

Apply the prescribed amount to the instructed external lip skin and avoid licking or picking. Use a bland, fragrance-free barrier product if advised, and pause new lip balms, cosmetics, or flavouring products that may be irritating. Do not put a skin cream inside the mouth unless it was specifically prescribed for oral use. Keep the tube clean and do not share it.

Arrange assessment if cracks persist, the lips bleed repeatedly, swelling increases, or the problem keeps returning. Seek prompt help for rapidly developing lip or tongue swelling, trouble breathing or swallowing, spreading redness, pus, or fever. A sore that does not heal or a one-sided persistent change also needs clinical review rather than repeated self-treatment.
