When is topical antifungal treatment recommended for ringworm?

Ringworm is a fungal skin infection, not a worm. It may form an expanding, scaly or itchy patch with a clearer centre, but other rashes can look similar. A clinician considers the site, size, number of patches and whether hair, nails or the scalp are involved. Cream, lotion or another topical form can work on accessible skin when the infection is limited. Scalp involvement, widespread disease, repeated recurrence or an uncertain diagnosis may call for a different treatment plan.

Apply the advised medicine to clean, dry skin and follow the full instructions, including how far beyond the visible edge to apply it if directed. Wash hands before and after use. Keep the area dry, avoid scratching, and do not share towels, clothing, bedding, brushes or sports equipment.
