When is topical antifungal treatment recommended for intertrigo?

Intertrigo develops where skin rubs against skin and warmth or moisture becomes trapped, such as beneath the breasts, in the groin, armpits, or abdominal folds. Yeast can add a more persistent infection to that irritation. The affected skin may be red, tender, cracked, or damp, with small spots around the edge. Bacterial infection, contact dermatitis, and other conditions can resemble fungal intertrigo, so treatment depends on the pattern and examination.

Gently wash the fold, dry it carefully, and choose loose, breathable clothing. Reduce rubbing and change damp clothing after sweating. If a clinician recommends an antifungal, apply it to clean, dry skin as directed and wash your hands afterwards. Avoid sharing towels and avoid applying fragranced products to the fold. Seek medical care if redness is rapidly spreading, the fold becomes hot or very painful, pus or an unpleasant smell develops, or you feel feverish. Arrange an assessment when cracks are deep, the rash keeps returning, or directed treatment does not improve it. These signs may indicate a different infection or a need to address an underlying skin problem.
