When is telemedicine consultation recommended for common cold?

A clinician can discuss a blocked or runny nose, sneezing, sore throat, cough, mild fever, hydration, rest, and suitable symptom relief. They can ask how symptoms began, whether they are changing, and whether another condition or medication affects your options. A remote consultation cannot always examine your throat, ears, chest, or oxygen level, so the clinician may recommend an in-person visit if the story or symptoms are concerning.

Record when symptoms started, your temperature if measured, medicines you take, allergies, and any contact with someone who was unwell. Have a list of treatments already tried. Rest, drink fluids, and follow the clinician’s advice. Do not use antibiotics left over from another illness; a common cold is usually caused by a virus and antibiotics do not treat viruses.

Seek urgent care for difficulty breathing, chest pain, blue or grey lips, severe drowsiness, dehydration, or a rapidly worsening illness. Arrange an in-person review for persistent high fever, severe one-sided facial pain, ear pain, or symptoms that improve and then become worse. Babies, older adults, pregnant people, and people with significant long-term conditions may need earlier assessment.
