When is targeted therapy recommended for myeloproliferative neoplasms?

The recommendation is personalised. Your haematology team weighs symptoms, examination findings, blood tests, mutation or molecular results, clotting or bleeding concerns, other illnesses and medicines you already take. Targeted therapy does not mean that every abnormal result requires a new medicine.

Ask which MPN subtype is being treated and what outcome the medicine is intended to achieve. Bring an up-to-date list of medicines, supplements and previous treatments. Before starting, discuss how the drug is taken, monitoring blood tests, possible effects on infection risk or blood counts, and what to do after a missed dose. Keep scheduled reviews so the team can assess symptoms, spleen changes and laboratory results. Do not stop a prescribed treatment suddenly without advice.

Seek urgent medical help for sudden chest pain, severe breathlessness, new weakness on one side, trouble speaking, fainting, a severe headache unlike usual, uncontrolled bleeding or a painful swollen leg. Contact your oncology or haematology team promptly for fever, chills, unusual bruising, black stools, rapidly worsening abdominal fullness or a marked change in symptoms while taking treatment.
