When is targeted therapy recommended for kidney cancer?

Kidney cancer treatment depends on the exact tumour type, scan findings, symptoms, kidney function and whether disease is confined to the kidney or present elsewhere. Targeted medicines can interfere with signals that help cancer cells form blood vessels or grow. They may be considered for advanced disease, after a previous treatment, or as part of a combination plan. The oncology team weighs expected benefit against blood pressure, bleeding, wound healing, heart, liver and kidney concerns, as well as other medicines you take.

Bring a list of medicines, supplements and previous cancer treatments. Ask what the scans show, whether the medicine is a tablet or infusion, and how kidney function, blood pressure, urine and blood tests will be checked. Tell the team about planned surgery or dental work, blood-clotting problems, chest symptoms and any difficulty taking tablets.

Call your treatment team promptly for severe headache, very high blood pressure symptoms, unusual bleeding, black stools, painful swelling, reduced urine, persistent diarrhoea, fever or new shortness of breath. Get emergency help for chest pain, sudden weakness, collapse, severe breathing difficulty or heavy bleeding.
