When is targeted therapy recommended for follicular lymphoma?

Follicular lymphoma can behave differently from one person to another. A team looks at symptoms, enlarged lymph nodes or organs, blood-test findings, the pace of change and whether the lymphoma is causing problems. Some people with stable, mild disease are monitored rather than treated immediately. When treatment is needed, a targeted medicine may be used alone or alongside another lymphoma treatment, depending on the subtype, prior medicines and treatment goal. The plan may change if the lymphoma returns or stops responding.

Keep appointments for examinations and blood tests even when you feel well, because changes may be found before symptoms become obvious. Ask whether a biopsy or other test is needed to guide the medicine. Review vaccination advice, infection risks, other medicines and the schedule for monitoring blood counts, liver function and treatment response. Report new lumps, night sweats, fevers or unplanned weight change.

Contact the lymphoma team promptly for fever, repeated infections, unusual bruising or bleeding, severe tiredness, rapidly enlarging swelling or new breathing difficulty. Seek emergency help for severe breathlessness, chest pain, confusion, fainting or uncontrolled bleeding.
