When is targeted therapy recommended for bowel cancer?

These medicines are designed to interfere with a specific signal or feature that helps cancer cells grow. Testing a tumour sample can look for changes such as gene alterations, protein markers or repair features that affect treatment choices. Some targeted medicines are considered when bowel cancer has spread or returned, while others may be combined with chemotherapy or another systemic treatment. The recommendation depends on whether the target is present, where the cancer is located, prior medicines, treatment goals, and liver, kidney and heart health.

Ask whether your tumour has had molecular testing and which result supports the proposed medicine. Review how the treatment is given, how often you will attend, which side effects need early attention, and whether treatment is intended to shrink disease, control it, or reduce the chance of return. Keep a current list of medicines and tell the team about skin problems, bleeding, bowel symptoms and heart conditions.

Contact your oncology team promptly for fever, new or worsening shortness of breath, chest pain, severe diarrhoea, marked abdominal pain, unusual bleeding, or a wound that is not healing. Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, fainting, sudden weakness or heavy bleeding.
