When is STI screening recommended for syphilis?

Screening uses a blood test to look for signs of syphilis infection. A clinician may recommend testing even when you feel well because early infection can have few noticeable symptoms. Testing is also relevant if a sexual partner has syphilis, if you have another sexually transmitted infection, or if sexual contact has occurred without barrier protection. Avoid sex or use barriers until you receive advice about transmission and results. Seek prompt medical assessment for a painless sore on the genitals, mouth, or rectum, a new widespread rash, swollen glands, vision changes, hearing changes, severe headache, or confusion after a possible exposure. Pregnancy makes timely assessment especially important. Do not wait for symptoms if a partner has told you they have syphilis.
