When is splinting recommended for AC joint injury?

Short answer
Splinting or sling support may be recommended after an AC joint injury to rest the shoulder briefly, reduce painful movement, and protect healing tissues while treatment is planned.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Support goal
- Comfort and protection during the early phase.
- Movement
- Gentle movement is introduced when clinically appropriate.
What the support does
The acromioclavicular joint connects the collarbone to the highest part of the shoulder blade. A fall or direct blow can sprain or separate the supporting ligaments. A sling can support the arm and make early movement more comfortable, but it does not repair a major separation. The appropriate support and wearing time depend on tenderness, deformity, arm function, skin condition, and whether a fracture or another shoulder injury is present.
Using support safely
Have the shoulder assessed if pain, swelling, or a visible bump follows an injury. Use the prescribed sling or support as directed, keep the hand and wrist moving if allowed, and avoid lifting or activities that sharply increase pain. Do not keep the shoulder completely still longer than advised, because stiffness can develop. Ask when gentle shoulder movement and physiotherapy should begin, and how the support should fit around the neck and elbow.
When to seek prompt care
Seek urgent assessment if the hand becomes cold, pale, blue, very swollen, or numb, or if you cannot move the fingers. Get prompt medical advice for an obvious deformity, severe pain, an open wound, fever, or pain that is worsening rather than settling.
Questions to ask
Is this a sprain, separation, or possible fracture? How long should I use the sling? Which movements are safe now, and when should I start shoulder exercises?

Questions people ask
Should I wear the sling all day?
Only for the schedule advised by your clinician; prolonged immobilisation can contribute to shoulder stiffness.
Does a sling correct the joint separation?
A sling supports the arm but does not realign or repair damaged ligaments.
