When Is a Skin Graft Recommended for Burn Scars?

A graft uses healthy skin from another part of the body to cover a prepared area. For a burn scar, the surgeon may release a tight band or remove damaged tissue before placing the graft. This can improve coverage and may help movement when the scar crosses a joint, eyelid, mouth, or another area that needs flexibility. A graft changes the surface and texture of the area; it does not erase every scar feature, and the donor site also needs healing.

A burn or reconstructive surgeon will examine the scar, nearby joints, skin quality, movement, previous operations, and any open areas. Bring a list of medicines and mention smoking, diabetes, circulation problems, allergies, or earlier healing difficulties. Ask where donor skin may come from, how dressings will be managed, what movement is allowed during healing, and whether physiotherapy or pressure treatment will follow the procedure.

Arrange specialist review if a scar splits, forms an ulcer, repeatedly blisters, bleeds, or limits daily movement. Seek prompt medical care for increasing warmth, swelling, pus, fever, rapidly worsening pain, or a new open wound. After graft surgery, report a dressing that becomes soaked, a graft area that changes colour, worsening pain, or signs of infection according to the surgeon's instructions.

Ask what problem the graft is intended to solve, whether scar release is needed, which graft type is suitable, how the donor site will feel, what the scar may look like, and how rehabilitation will protect movement while the graft settles.
