When Is Skin Cancer Surgery Recommended for Squamous Cell Carcinoma?

Squamous cell carcinoma can invade nearby tissue and, in some cases, spread beyond the original skin site. A dermatologist weighs the biopsy findings, tumour borders, depth, location, nerve symptoms, immune status, and whether the lesion has returned. Excision removes the tumour with surrounding tissue for laboratory examination. Mohs surgery may be useful in selected high-risk areas, recurrent tumours, or lesions with indistinct edges because tissue can be checked during the operation.

Book the recommended surgical consultation and bring the biopsy information if it was performed elsewhere. Explain medicines that affect bleeding, immune conditions, allergies, and previous wound-healing problems. Ask how the wound will be closed and cared for, whether a graft or flap is possible, and when pathology results will be available. Protect the area from sun and avoid picking at crusts while waiting.

Seek prompt assessment for a firm scaly growth, a sore that enlarges or repeatedly bleeds, or a non-healing wound. After an operation, contact the clinic if pressure does not control bleeding or if redness, warmth, drainage, fever, or pain is worsening. New tenderness, numbness, or a lump near the treated site should be reported because it may change the follow-up plan.

Ask whether the tumour is considered high risk, which technique is proposed, how margins will be checked, whether nearby nerves or lymph nodes need attention, what scar care involves, and how often the treated area and surrounding skin should be examined.
