When Is Skin Cancer Surgery Recommended for Basal Cell Carcinoma?

Basal cell carcinoma usually grows locally, but untreated disease can extend into nearby tissue. A dermatologist considers the tumour's size, edges, depth, subtype, position, and whether it has returned after earlier treatment. Standard excision removes the visible lesion with a margin of surrounding skin. Mohs surgery may be discussed for a tumour on the nose, eyelid, ear, lip, fingers, or another area where conserving healthy tissue is especially useful, or when the edges are difficult to define.

After diagnosis, ask how the biopsy result guides the procedure and whether the specimen will be checked at the edges. Tell the surgical team about medicines, allergies, bleeding problems, and previous operations. Follow instructions about washing the area and medicines before the appointment. Plan wound care, sun protection, and any time away from work according to the location and size of the repair.

Arrange prompt review for a sore that repeatedly crusts or bleeds, a shiny bump that enlarges, or a wound that remains open. After surgery, contact the clinic for bleeding that continues despite pressure, worsening redness, pus, increasing pain, fever, or separation of the wound edges. New changes near the scar also deserve assessment rather than self-treatment.
