When Is Skin Brightening Treatment Recommended for Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation?

Short answer
Skin brightening treatment may be recommended for post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation when the original inflammation has settled, the cause is controlled and the skin is ready for a gentle, targeted approach.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How these marks develop
Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is excess colour left after acne, eczema, a rash, a burn, an insect bite, an injury or another source of inflammation. The mark may remain after the skin feels normal because pigment-producing cells were stimulated during healing.
Treating active acne or dermatitis matters first. Peels, lasers or strong topical products applied to inflamed skin can cause further irritation and prolong the mark, so the plan should match the skin’s current condition and tone.
Making treatment safer
Use gentle products, avoid picking and protect the area from sunlight while it heals. Show the clinician photographs or describe what happened before the mark appeared. Ask whether a topical plan is enough, whether a patch test is sensible, and what signs mean the treatment should be paused.
When to seek care
Seek assessment if the original rash keeps returning, the area is painful, scaly, swollen or draining, or the mark changes in a way that does not fit healing. Contact the provider after treatment for intense burning, blisters, worsening redness, infection or rapidly spreading darkening.
Questions for your doctor
Has the inflammation fully settled? What caused the mark, and how will we prevent new ones? Which option fits my skin tone and sensitivity, and how long should I use it before deciding whether the plan needs changing?

Questions people ask
Should I brighten a mark while acne is still active?
The acne or other inflammation should usually be addressed first because ongoing irritation can create new marks and prolong existing ones.
Can post-inflammatory marks fade without a procedure?
Some fade gradually as the skin renews, while treatment may be considered when marks persist or cause significant concern.
