When is shoulder stabilisation surgery recommended for shoulder instability?

Shoulder instability means the joint moves too far, partly slips, or dislocates because its muscles, ligaments, labrum, or bone do not provide enough control. People may describe a slipping sensation, apprehension with the arm raised, repeated dislocations, or pain during specific activities. The assessment looks at direction of instability, muscle control, previous injuries, and imaging findings before a procedure is proposed.

Avoid movements that repeatedly provoke slipping while keeping the shoulder gently mobile within a safe range. Complete the prescribed strengthening and control programme, and note whether symptoms persist during work, sleep, exercise, or self-care. Ask how the procedure would address your instability and how long protection and rehabilitation would affect your routine.

Seek urgent assessment if the shoulder suddenly comes out of place, pain follows a new injury, or the arm develops numbness, marked weakness, unusual colour, or feels cold. Emergency care is needed if the hand cannot move normally or circulation appears impaired.

Ask whether your instability is due mainly to soft tissue or bone, what rehabilitation has achieved, which operation is proposed, and how return to lifting or sport will be staged.
