When Is Shockwave Therapy Recommended for Tennis Elbow?

Short answer
Shockwave therapy may be recommended for tennis elbow when outer-elbow pain continues despite tailored exercise, activity changes, and confirmation of the diagnosis.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical pain location
- The outer elbow and nearby forearm
- Rehabilitation partner
- Gradual wrist and forearm strengthening
What tennis elbow involves
Tennis elbow, also called lateral elbow tendinopathy, affects the tendon attachment on the outside of the elbow. Gripping, lifting a kettle, turning a handle, or extending the wrist can reproduce pain. Shockwaves are applied to the selected tendon area and can be uncomfortable during a session. A clinician checks strength, neck and nerve function, elbow movement, and other causes before recommending it.
Steps before deciding
Record which tasks trigger symptoms and whether pain lingers afterward. An assessment can guide a gradual forearm strengthening plan, changes to gripping or repetitive work, and temporary support if appropriate. Discuss the expected treatment course, how the elbow will be protected between visits, and when to progress loading. Do not use treatment to push through worsening weakness. See Tennis Elbow and Shockwave Therapy for related explanations.
When to seek care promptly
Seek prompt care for a significant injury, sudden weakness, an elbow that is hot and swollen, fever, new numbness, a pale or cold hand, or pain that is rapidly worsening. These signs warrant assessment before planned shockwave treatment.
Questions to ask
Could the neck or a nerve be contributing to my pain? Which gripping tasks should I change? What exercise progression will accompany treatment, and how will we judge whether the plan needs revision?

Questions people ask
Is tennis elbow limited to tennis players?
No. Repeated gripping, lifting, wrist use, or manual work can load the same tendon attachment.
Can I stop my exercises during treatment?
Do not stop or change them without guidance. The loading plan may need pacing around sessions, but strengthening supports recovery.
