When is second opinion recommended for metastatic cancer?

Metastatic cancer means cancer has spread from its original site to another part of the body. Care may involve medicines that work throughout the body, focused treatment for a particular area, symptom relief, or a combination. The most suitable plan depends on the cancer type, where it has spread, previous treatment, test results, general health, and personal priorities.

A second specialist can review the pathology, scans, molecular tests, and treatment history. The review may confirm the current plan, identify another reasonable option, or explain why a proposed treatment is not suitable. It does not require you to change doctors.

Request copies of pathology reports, scan reports and images, blood results, treatment summaries, and the current medicine list. Write down the treatment goal, symptoms, side effects, and what matters most to you, such as time at home or avoiding a particular burden.
