When is radiotherapy recommended for bone cancer?

The recommendation depends on whether the cancer began in bone or reached bone from another area, its position, its size, and how it relates to nearby nerves and organs. Radiation can be aimed at a defined area. It may be used before surgery to help manage a tumour, after surgery when there is concern that cancer cells remain, or when an operation cannot safely remove the affected area.

For cancer that has spread to bone, a focused course may reduce pain or help protect a weakened area. Radiotherapy is planned around the rest of your care, which can include surgery, medicines, or supportive treatment. The radiation team will discuss expected benefits and possible effects on nearby healthy tissue.

Ask how the treatment fits with scans, surgery, and any cancer medicines. Planning commonly includes imaging so the team can map the bone and nearby structures, followed by a schedule of treatment visits. Tell the team about previous radiotherapy, implanted devices, pregnancy or possible pregnancy, and medicines you take.

During treatment, report increasing pain, skin changes, tiredness, or difficulty moving the treated area. Do not change pain medicines or activity restrictions without guidance, especially if the bone is fragile. A physiotherapist or pain team may help you move safely and stay comfortable.

Contact your cancer team promptly for pain that suddenly worsens, new weakness or numbness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or inability to use the affected limb. Seek emergency care after a fall or sudden injury if you cannot stand, walk, or bear weight, because a weakened bone may be injured.

Ask what the radiation is intended to achieve, which bone and nearby tissues will be treated, how it may interact with surgery or medicines, which effects should be reported quickly, and what movement or weight-bearing limits apply.
