When Is Pulsed Dye Laser Treatment Recommended for Spider Veins?

Spider veins, also called telangiectasia or thread veins, are fine visible blood vessels near the skin surface. Pulsed dye laser uses a selected light wavelength to heat blood within suitable vessels while limiting exposure to nearby skin. It is more often discussed for small superficial red vessels, including facial vessels, than for larger or deeper veins. A clinician checks the location, vessel colour and size, symptoms, skin tone, tanning, and possible underlying venous problems. The appearance alone does not establish which treatment is appropriate.

Book an examination if the vessels are new, numerous, or associated with pain, swelling, heaviness, or skin changes. Bring a list of medicines and mention previous laser treatments, easy scarring, cold sores, or pigment changes. Ask whether another vascular treatment is more suitable for the vessel's depth and location. Protect the area from sunlight as advised, avoid irritating products, and follow instructions about shaving or skincare. After treatment, mild redness or swelling can occur; use the recommended care and avoid picking at the skin.
