When is prescription antiperspirant recommended for intertrigo?

Intertrigo develops where skin rubs against skin and warmth and moisture remain trapped, such as under the breasts, in the groin, or between abdominal folds. Sweat reduction may help some people keep the area drier, but it does not treat every cause of a fold rash. Redness, soreness, cracking, scaling, or an odour can also reflect irritation or an overgrowth of yeast or bacteria, so the diagnosis should come before adding a stronger product.

Have a clinician examine a recurring or extensive fold rash before using prescription antiperspirant. Gentle washing, careful drying, loose breathable clothing, and reducing friction can support recovery. Do not apply antiperspirant to raw, cracked, infected-looking, or freshly shaved skin unless the prescriber specifically advises it. If a clinician recommends it, follow the application instructions and stop if the fold becomes more inflamed.

Seek medical care when the rash spreads, becomes very painful, drains fluid, develops a strong new odour, or does not improve with basic skin care. Fever or feeling unwell needs prompt assessment. A fold rash that keeps returning may need treatment aimed at infection, inflammation, friction, or an underlying condition rather than moisture control alone.

Ask what is causing the rash, whether sweat reduction is appropriate for that skin site, how to prevent irritation, and whether you need a separate cream or test.
