When is pre-marital screening recommended for sickle cell carrier?

Sickle cell trait means a person carries one altered haemoglobin gene. Carriers often do not have sickle cell disease, but the result matters when planning children because the other partner's haemoglobin status helps determine possible inherited outcomes. A screening result is not the same as a diagnosis of disease.

Share any previous haemoglobin or family-history results with the clinician and arrange testing for both partners when advised. If a carrier result is found, request genetic counselling so the couple can understand confirmatory testing, reproductive choices and what the result means for relatives.

Seek specialist advice before pregnancy when both partners are carriers, when results conflict, or when a family member has sickle cell disease or another haemoglobin disorder. A counsellor can explain the findings carefully and help avoid assumptions based only on symptoms or ancestry.
