When is follow-up after thyroid cancer treatment recommended?

Your review may include a neck examination, thyroid blood tests, and an ultrasound of the neck. After thyroid removal, thyroglobulin and related antibodies may help the team assess whether thyroid tissue or cancer activity is detectable. The usefulness of each test depends on the operation, radioactive iodine treatment, and cancer features.

Follow-up also checks whether thyroid hormone replacement is controlling symptoms and meeting the treatment goal. Tell your clinician about palpitations, tremor, sleep difficulty, fatigue, temperature sensitivity, voice change, swallowing difficulty, or a new neck lump.

Take thyroid hormone exactly as instructed and ask before changing the dose or timing. Keep laboratory appointments, bring your medicine list, and note symptoms or changes in the neck. Ask whether a blood test requires a particular preparation and how results will be interpreted together.

If you received radioactive iodine, follow the aftercare instructions given by your team. Keep copies of previous scan and blood-test results available when seeing a new clinician, because trends are more informative than an isolated result.

Contact your clinical team promptly for a growing neck swelling, persistent hoarseness, increasing difficulty swallowing, new shortness of breath, or symptoms suggesting the hormone dose is not suitable. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty or rapidly increasing neck swelling.
