When is follow-up after smouldering myeloma treatment recommended?

Smouldering myeloma may not cause symptoms needing immediate treatment, but the abnormal plasma-cell activity can change. Reviews commonly assess blood counts, kidney function, calcium, and the level or pattern of abnormal immunoglobulin. Urine testing may also help show how the condition is behaving.

Your clinician may ask about bone pain, tiredness, repeated infections, thirst, constipation, weight change, numbness, or reduced urine. Depending on the findings, imaging or a bone-marrow assessment may be discussed. A change in one result is interpreted alongside your symptoms and other tests.

Attend the planned blood or urine tests and keep a record of new symptoms, infections, medicines, and changes in daily activity. Tell the team if you have difficulty attending, because an alternative schedule may be safer than silently missing monitoring.

Stay hydrated according to your clinician’s advice and check before taking new supplements or medicines, especially if kidney function is being monitored. Ask how results will be shared and whether you need a named contact between visits.

Contact your haematology team promptly for new persistent bone or back pain, unusual bruising, repeated infections, marked tiredness, increasing thirst, constipation, reduced urine, or new numbness. Seek urgent help for sudden weakness, confusion, severe pain after a minor injury, or inability to pass urine.

Ask: How often should I have blood and urine tests? Which changes would prompt imaging or treatment? Which symptoms should I report the same day? How will I receive results?
