When is post-operative rehabilitation recommended for tibial plateau fracture?

Short answer
Post-operative rehabilitation is recommended after tibial plateau fracture surgery, beginning with approved knee movement and mobility while weight bearing remains limited until healing is confirmed.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Early goals
- Reduce stiffness and maintain safe muscle activity.
- Loading
- Increase weight bearing only after clinical clearance.
Why rehabilitation is staged
The tibial plateau forms the upper surface of the shinbone at the knee. Surgery may restore alignment, but the bone and surrounding tissues still need time to heal under controlled load. Early physiotherapy can reduce stiffness, maintain hip and ankle movement, activate thigh muscles and teach safe transfers. Knee range, standing and walking are advanced according to imaging, examination findings, fixation stability and the surgeon’s weight-bearing instructions.
Safe activity after surgery
Use crutches, a frame or another aid as instructed, and keep the operated leg within its permitted loading level. Practise prescribed knee and ankle exercises without forcing a painful range. Elevate the leg when advised and watch for changes in swelling. Do not add walking distance, stairs or resistance training until the orthopaedic team approves the change.
When to seek care
Contact the team for worsening wound redness, drainage, fever, increasing pain, new numbness, a cold or pale foot, or swelling that is rapidly increasing. Urgent assessment is needed for sudden breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, or severe calf pain with swelling.
Questions for your doctor
Ask how much weight is allowed, which knee movements are safe, when follow-up imaging will guide progression, and how to manage bathing, transfers and stairs.

Questions people ask
Can my knee move while I am not allowed to bear weight?
Often, prescribed knee movement is possible, but the permitted range must follow the fixation and fracture-healing plan.
Why should walking progression wait for review?
The healing bone and surgical fixation must be checked before greater loading is placed through the knee.
