When is picosecond laser treatment recommended for ochronosis?

Exogenous ochronosis is a stubborn blue-grey or brown discoloration linked to exposure to certain skin-lightening products. The dermatologist reviews product use, examines the colour and texture, and may consider other causes of pigmentation. Laser can irritate treated skin or cause a new colour change, so stable disease, realistic goals and a tailored test area may be part of planning.

Stop the suspected lightening product only with a clinician's guidance if the skin is inflamed, and bring product names or photographs to the appointment. Avoid tanning and unplanned peels. Follow preparation and aftercare instructions, use gentle cleansing and protect the area from sunlight. Report persistent irritation before another session is scheduled.

Seek review if pigmentation is rapidly changing, painful, thickened, ulcerated or accompanied by a spreading rash. After laser, call the clinic for severe pain, blistering, increasing warmth, drainage, facial swelling or a marked colour shift.

Ask how the diagnosis was established, whether the product trigger must remain stopped, whether a test spot is appropriate, what alternatives exist, and how worsening pigment would be managed.
