When is picosecond laser treatment recommended for freckles?

Freckles, also called ephelides, are small pigment spots that often become more visible after sunlight exposure. A picosecond laser sends brief energy pulses into pigment, which the body then clears gradually. The spots may fade, but new freckles can appear with later sun exposure and existing pigment may return.

Skin may look red or swollen after treatment and can temporarily become darker or lighter. The risk of pigment change is particularly relevant when the treated skin is naturally darker or recently tanned, so assessment and conservative settings matter.

Choose a qualified clinician who will inspect each mark rather than treating every brown spot automatically. Mention pregnancy, a history of poor scarring, cold sores, recent tanning, and products or medicines that irritate skin or increase light sensitivity.

Use broad-spectrum sun protection and avoid tanning before and after treatment as directed. Ask whether a small test area is sensible, how the skin should be cleansed, and when makeup or active skincare can be resumed.
