When is physiotherapy recommended for biceps tendinitis?

Short answer
Physiotherapy is recommended when biceps tendinitis causes ongoing shoulder pain or limited function and a graded programme is appropriate.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical pain area
- Front of the shoulder
- Rehabilitation goal
- Comfortable movement and gradual load tolerance
What the tendon does
The biceps tendon crosses the front of the shoulder and helps with elbow bending and forearm rotation. Irritation may cause pain at the front of the shoulder, especially with lifting, reaching overhead or turning the palm upward. Shoulder assessment matters because rotator-cuff or joint problems can produce similar symptoms. Physiotherapy aims to restore comfortable movement, improve shoulder-blade control and build tolerance gradually.
How treatment is usually paced
Your therapist may begin with activity changes, comfortable range-of-motion exercises and light strengthening for the shoulder and upper arm. Later work can introduce controlled lifting as symptoms settle. Keep frequently used objects close, avoid repeated painful overhead effort, and follow the prescribed load rather than testing the tendon with sudden heavy exercise. Report bruising, a new bulge in the upper arm, sudden weakness or a popping sensation after an injury.
When to seek further care
Arrange review if pain limits sleep, dressing or work, or if movement is becoming more restricted. Seek urgent assessment after a fall or forceful lift that causes a pop, bruising, visible change in the upper arm or sudden loss of strength. Symptoms that do not improve with a guided plan may require reassessment of the diagnosis.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the biceps tendon is the main pain source, which movements to modify, how much strengthening is suitable, and when a return to lifting is reasonable.

Questions people ask
Can I keep training with biceps tendinitis?
Modify or pause painful loading and use a clinician-guided progression instead of continuing heavy or repetitive movements.
Does physiotherapy involve only the biceps?
No. Treatment may also address shoulder movement, the shoulder blade, posture and nearby muscle strength.
