When is PGT-M recommended for recurrent miscarriage?

Short answer
PGT-M may be considered after recurrent miscarriage when a confirmed single-gene condition explains the family risk and an embryo test can be specifically developed.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why the cause matters
Recurrent miscarriage has many possible causes, and PGT-M is designed for one narrow situation: embryos are tested for a named inherited condition caused by a specific gene change. It does not investigate every reason a pregnancy may miscarry and is different from PGT-A, which looks for extra or missing chromosomes.
A genetics and fertility team may examine pregnancy tissue results, parental testing, family history, and prior specialist assessments. If no single-gene diagnosis is established, another evaluation may be more relevant than PGT-M.
Planning the next step
Ask for genetic counselling before starting IVF. Bring reports from pregnancy tissue testing, previous genetic tests, and any diagnosis in the family. If a gene variant is confirmed, the laboratory can discuss whether a tailored PGT-M test is feasible and how long preparation may take.
Discuss what happens if embryos have no result, carry the condition, or are suitable for transfer. The team can also explain whether pregnancy testing would be advised after transfer.
When to seek care urgently
During a pregnancy, seek urgent assessment for heavy bleeding, severe one-sided pain, shoulder-tip pain, dizziness, fainting, or fever. After miscarriage, prompt care is needed for worsening pain, heavy bleeding, fever, or feeling very unwell. These warning signs are separate from deciding about embryo testing.
Questions for your doctor
Has testing identified a single-gene cause? Would PGT-M target that exact finding? What other miscarriage investigations remain relevant, and what pregnancy testing would follow an embryo transfer?

Questions people ask
Is recurrent miscarriage alone an indication for PGT-M?
No. PGT-M needs a specific inherited condition or gene variant that the laboratory can target.
Is PGT-M the same as PGT-A?
No. PGT-M targets a named single-gene condition, while PGT-A assesses embryo chromosome number.
