When is PET-CT scan recommended for lymphoma?

Lymphoma can involve lymph nodes and organs in different parts of the body. PET-CT combines anatomical images with a tracer that highlights many metabolically active areas. Before treatment, this may help show the distribution of disease and select a safe site for biopsy when needed. During or after treatment, comparison with earlier images may help the team judge whether active lymphoma has reduced. Infection, inflammation, and recent treatment can also affect tracer uptake, so a scan finding needs interpretation with symptoms, examination, blood tests, and pathology.

Follow the department's instructions about fasting, medicines, and blood glucose. Tell the team about diabetes, pregnancy or breastfeeding, recent infection, and any treatment you have received. Bring information about earlier scans when requested. Wear warm, comfortable clothing and plan for a quiet period after the tracer is given. Ask when the report will be discussed and whether the result will be compared with a particular earlier scan.

Get urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, sudden confusion, fainting, uncontrolled bleeding, or rapidly worsening weakness. Call your lymphoma team promptly for persistent fever, drenching night sweats, rapidly enlarging swelling, or symptoms that interfere with drinking and daily activity. Do not wait for a routine scan appointment when you feel acutely unwell.
