PARP inhibitors interfere with DNA repair, which can make it harder for cancers with certain repair weaknesses to keep growing. In pancreatic cancer, the team considers whether an inherited BRCA-related change is present, whether platinum treatment has controlled the disease, the cancer's extent, earlier medicines, and your general health. Inherited testing uses a blood or saliva sample and is different from testing a tumour sample alone. A positive inherited result may have implications for relatives.

Ask the oncology team whether inherited testing has been arranged and whether tumour testing adds useful information. Bring details of prior platinum treatment and any history of low blood counts, kidney problems, or liver problems. If a PARP inhibitor is prescribed, take it exactly as directed and attend blood-test appointments. Tell the team about all medicines and supplements before starting it.

Seek prompt medical help for fever, infection symptoms, unusual bleeding or bruising, severe breathlessness, chest pain, or sudden severe weakness while taking treatment. These symptoms can reflect significant treatment effects or another urgent problem. The prescribing team can advise whether a dose needs adjusting or treatment needs pausing.
