When is palliative radiotherapy recommended for metastatic breast cancer?

Radiotherapy treats a selected area rather than all metastatic breast cancer in the body. It may be discussed for painful bone disease, a mass pressing on nerves, symptoms from a chest or breast-area deposit, or a lesion near the spinal cord or brain. The decision considers scan findings, symptoms, previous radiation, other cancer treatments, and the person's priorities.

The oncology team may combine local radiation with systemic treatment, pain medicines, steroids, surgery, a brace, or rehabilitation. The purpose is symptom relief or protection of function; it does not mean other treatment options have automatically ended.

Describe the exact location and pattern of pain or other symptoms, including effects on walking, sleep, vision, strength, eating, or breathing. Tell the team about previous radiation, medicines, falls, seizures, and any new neurological symptoms. Bring a current medicine list to the review.

Ask what the radiation is intended to achieve, how treatment fits with systemic therapy, what preparation is needed, and how symptoms will be monitored afterward. Keep taking prescribed medicines unless instructed otherwise.

Seek emergency help for new weakness, numbness, loss of bladder or bowel control, a seizure, sudden confusion, severe headache with vomiting, collapse, or severe breathing difficulty. These may indicate pressure on the spinal cord, brain involvement, or another urgent complication. Contact the cancer team quickly for rapidly worsening pain or a fall.
