When is paediatric physiotherapy recommended for knock knees?

Short answer
Paediatric physiotherapy may be recommended for knock knees when pain, weakness, balance problems, or movement difficulties affect a child’s walking, play, or other daily activities.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Therapy targets
- Leg strength, hip control, balance, walking, and comfortable activity.
- Review factors
- Growth stage, symmetry, progression, pain, and movement quality.
What knock knees involve
Knock knees, or genu valgum, describe knees that come closer together while the ankles remain apart. This alignment can change as a child grows. Physiotherapy is aimed at function: it may improve hip and leg strength, control of the knee during movement, balance, and confidence with activity. It does not automatically alter the shape of growing bones. The clinician considers age, symmetry, progression, pain, and how the child moves.
Planning an assessment
Arrange a review if the alignment is painful, noticeably uneven, worsening, or interfering with stairs, running, or play. A physiotherapist may assess walking, squatting, balance, muscle strength, and joint movement before choosing games and exercises. Use the recommended programme consistently, but stop an activity that causes sharp pain and report that response. When to seek care
Seek prompt medical advice if the child suddenly cannot walk, develops significant swelling or pain, has fever with a painful joint, or has a rapid change in one leg. Difficulty bearing weight after an injury should be assessed before starting exercises.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the knee position is appropriate for the child’s growth stage and whether both sides are similar. Ask which activities are helpful, whether footwear or another treatment is needed, and when alignment or function should be reassessed.

Questions people ask
Will physiotherapy remove knock knees?
It can improve strength and movement control, but structural alignment may continue to follow the child’s natural growth pattern.
Can a child continue sports?
Many children can stay active with suitable adjustments; painful activities should be modified until the clinician advises otherwise.
