When is ovarian drilling recommended for anovulation?

Anovulation means the ovary does not release an egg regularly, which can make conception difficult and may cause irregular or absent periods. Ovarian drilling uses keyhole surgery to make small openings in ovarian tissue. It may alter hormone activity and allow ovulation in selected patients, but it is not suitable for every cause of anovulation.

Your fertility team may assess ovulation, hormones, ovarian reserve, fallopian tubes and sperm factors before recommending an operation. Discuss medicine options, expected monitoring, possible effects on ovarian tissue and what happens if ovulation does not return. A pregnancy plan should include cycle tracking and follow-up.

After surgery, seek urgent help for severe abdominal pain, fever, heavy bleeding, faintness, breathing trouble or a swollen painful wound. During fertility treatment, severe pain with vomiting or rapidly increasing abdominal swelling needs prompt assessment.
