When is oral corticosteroid treatment recommended for pyoderma gangrenosum?

Pyoderma gangrenosum causes painful inflammatory ulcers, often with a ragged or undermined edge. The condition can worsen after injury to the skin, so treatment and dressing changes need careful planning. Oral corticosteroids act throughout the body to suppress the inflammation. A specialist may use them alone initially or combine them with another immune-modifying treatment, depending on the ulcer's pace, size, location, and your health.

Contact a dermatologist promptly for a painful ulcer that is enlarging or failing to heal. Diagnosis may require excluding infection and other ulcer causes. Follow the dressing plan, protect the surrounding skin, and avoid picking or unplanned surgical debridement. Tell your clinician about diabetes, infections, blood pressure, stomach disease, bone concerns, and medicines that affect immunity. Never borrow corticosteroid tablets or stop them abruptly.
