When is oral corticosteroid treatment recommended for skin vasculitis?

Skin vasculitis is inflammation of small blood vessels in the skin. It may produce clusters of red or purple spots that can be felt, blisters, sores, swelling, or pain, often on the lower legs. A clinician may look for a medicine, infection, autoimmune condition, or another trigger. Urine, blood tests, and other checks may be needed when symptoms suggest that vessels outside the skin are involved.

Arrange review rather than self-treating a new purple or blistering rash with leftover steroids. Keep a list of recent medicines and illnesses, and photograph changes for comparison. Follow wound-care advice for any open area, protect the skin from friction, and take prescribed treatment on schedule. Tell your clinician about kidney disease, diabetes, infections, pregnancy, and medicines that affect immunity.

Seek urgent assessment for blood in the urine, very dark urine, reduced urination, severe abdominal pain, vomiting blood, chest pain, shortness of breath, weakness, numbness, or rapidly spreading painful skin damage. Fever with a worsening wound also needs prompt review. These signs can indicate infection or involvement beyond the skin.

Ask whether the vasculitis appears limited to the skin, what trigger is being investigated, and why oral steroids are preferred or not preferred. Discuss wound care, treatment length, tapering, monitoring tests, and the exact symptoms that require emergency help.
