When is oral corticosteroid treatment recommended for angioedema?

Angioedema is deep swelling, often around the lips, eyelids, face, hands, or throat. Steroids reduce inflammation, but they do not replace emergency treatment when breathing or swallowing is affected. The underlying pattern matters: histamine-related swelling may be managed alongside an antihistamine, while other forms of angioedema may not respond to steroids in the same way. A clinician may review new medicines, foods, insect stings, infections, and previous episodes before choosing treatment.

Arrange medical assessment for new, widespread, recurring, or slow-to-settle swelling. Take the medicine only as prescribed and follow the planned schedule; do not start leftover tablets or stop a longer course suddenly without instructions. Tell the clinician about diabetes, stomach problems, mood changes, infections, pregnancy, and every medicine or supplement you use. Keep a record of possible triggers and whether hives, abdominal pain, or voice change occurred.

Call emergency services immediately for swelling of the tongue or throat, trouble breathing, noisy breathing, faintness, confusion, or difficulty swallowing saliva. Use a prescribed adrenaline auto-injector according to your emergency plan if advised, then seek emergency care. Swelling with severe abdominal pain or repeated vomiting also needs prompt assessment because angioedema can affect internal tissues.
