When is antihistamine treatment recommended for angioedema?

Angioedema is deeper swelling, often affecting the lips, eyelids, face, hands, feet, or genitals. A histamine-driven episode may occur with raised itchy hives. An antihistamine can reduce the effect of histamine on the skin, so it may calm itch and help swelling settle. It does not treat every cause of angioedema, and it cannot open an obstructed airway.

Use only an antihistamine selected for you by a pharmacist or clinician, following the product directions. Some products can cause drowsiness or interact with other medicines, so avoid driving or alcohol if the label warns against it. Note when the swelling began, what areas are affected, recent foods or medicines, and whether hives are present. Arrange medical review if episodes recur or the trigger is unclear.

Call emergency services immediately for swelling of the tongue, mouth, or throat; trouble breathing, swallowing, speaking, or managing saliva; faintness; confusion; or rapidly worsening symptoms. Do not wait for an oral antihistamine to work when breathing may be affected. A clinician should also assess severe abdominal pain or repeated vomiting with swelling.
