Short answer

Oral antifungal treatment may be recommended for a skin yeast infection when the rash is widespread, persistent, recurrent, or unresponsive to topical treatment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Understanding skin yeast infection

Cutaneous candidiasis often develops in warm, moist folds such as the groin, under the breasts, or beneath the abdomen. It may cause a red, sore, itchy rash with small spots near the edge. A clinician may consider tablets when several areas are involved, topical treatment cannot be used effectively, or repeated episodes suggest an underlying trigger that needs attention.

How to prepare for assessment

Keep folds clean and dry, choose breathable clothing, and change damp garments promptly. Avoid steroid cream alone unless a clinician has advised it, because it can alter the appearance of an infection. Before oral treatment, tell the clinician about liver problems, pregnancy, allergies, and all medicines or supplements. Use treatment exactly as prescribed.

When to seek care

Arrange prompt review if the rash spreads quickly, becomes very painful, develops drainage, or comes with fever. Seek earlier assessment if you have diabetes or a weakened immune system. A persistent fold rash may be caused by irritation, psoriasis, or another infection and should not be treated indefinitely without a diagnosis.

Questions for your doctor

Ask how the diagnosis was made, whether a swab or skin scraping is needed, how long treatment should continue, and how to reduce moisture and recurrence in the affected fold.

Questions people ask

Can a skin yeast infection return?

Yes. Moisture, friction, certain health conditions, and medicines can contribute to recurrence, so prevention may be part of treatment.

Should I use a steroid cream on the rash?

Ask a clinician first. Steroids can sometimes worsen or disguise an infection when used without suitable antifungal treatment.
