When Is Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression Recommended for a Herniated Disc?

Short answer

Non-surgical spinal decompression may be considered for selected herniated disc symptoms after assessment, particularly when pain and movement limits persist despite a suitable conservative plan.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How the approach is assessed

The treatment uses a motorised table or controlled traction to vary the load through the spine. A clinician first checks your pain distribution, strength, reflexes, sensation, movement tolerance, and relevant health history. The aim is to make movement more comfortable; it is not a promise that a disc will return to a particular position.

It may be used with education, graded exercise, and activity modification. The plan should be reconsidered if symptoms do not change, if leg symptoms increase, or if the examination suggests a different source of pain.

What to do before trying it

Tell the clinician about osteoporosis, spinal surgery, fractures, inflammatory disease, cancer history, pregnancy, severe nerve symptoms, or medicines that affect bleeding. Share what sitting, bending, lifting, walking, and sleep are like. These details help determine whether traction is appropriate and how gently to begin.

During treatment, report sharp, electric, or spreading pain, increasing numbness, or new weakness immediately. Continue only the home movements that were prescribed, and judge progress by daily function as well as pain intensity.

When symptoms need urgent review

Seek urgent medical care for new bladder or bowel difficulty, numbness around the inner thighs or groin, rapidly worsening weakness, severe pain after trauma, fever with back pain, or unexplained weight loss. These signs need medical assessment rather than a traction session.

Questions for your clinician

Ask what findings support a herniated disc, why decompression is suitable for you, how progress will be measured, and when the plan will stop or change. Ask about exercise alternatives, expected short-term reactions, and which symptoms should be reported urgently.

Questions people ask

Is non-surgical decompression the same as spinal surgery?

No. It is an externally applied traction approach and does not involve an operation.

Should treatment hurt?

Tell the clinician about sharp or spreading pain; the force and plan may need adjustment.
