When is microdiscectomy recommended for cauda equina syndrome?

The cauda equina is a group of nerves at the lower end of the spinal canal. Compression can affect leg strength, sensation, bladder control, bowel control, and feeling around the inner thighs or buttocks. Microdiscectomy removes the disc material pressing on the nerves through a small opening. The exact operation depends on scan findings and the source of compression; it is not a routine option for ordinary back pain alone.

Treat warning symptoms as an emergency. Go to an emergency department immediately if you develop new difficulty passing urine, loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the saddle area, or worsening weakness in both legs. Tell the team when symptoms began and mention any recent back injury, disc problem, or change in walking.

Cauda equina syndrome can worsen quickly. New urinary retention, leakage you cannot control, altered saddle sensation, severe or progressive leg weakness, or difficulty walking requires emergency assessment rather than a routine appointment. Back pain with none of these warning signs still deserves medical review if it is severe or persistent, but it does not by itself establish cauda equina syndrome.

Ask what the scan shows, which nerves are compressed, why urgent decompression is advised, what other causes have been considered, and what bladder, bowel, leg-strength, and rehabilitation monitoring will be needed afterward.
