When is membrane sweep recommended for overdue pregnancy?

During an internal examination, a clinician gently separates the membranes around the baby from the cervix. This can release local hormones that may help the cervix soften and labour begin. It is offered only after discussing consent, comfort, and whether it fits your pregnancy. A sweep may be less suitable when the placenta is covering or close to the cervix, when there is unexplained bleeding, or when the waters have already broken.

You may have cramping, pelvic pressure, light spotting, or irregular contractions afterwards. Wear a pad if needed and ask your maternity team what level of bleeding is expected. A sweep does not promise that labour will start, and another option may be a planned induction or continued monitoring. Ask when your next review is due and what fetal movement pattern should prompt a call.

Contact your maternity unit urgently for heavy bleeding, severe or constant abdominal pain, reduced or absent fetal movement, a gush or ongoing trickle of fluid, fever, or contractions that are becoming regular and difficult to manage. Follow your local maternity instructions if they give you a different contact route.
