The test checks blood markers associated with liver-cell irritation and bile flow. These markers may be normal or abnormal for different reasons, so they cannot alone confirm hepatitis C or measure liver scarring. A clinician combines the result with hepatitis C antibody and viral testing, examination, history, and sometimes imaging.

Arrange medical review if you have a possible exposure, unexplained abnormal liver results, or symptoms such as tiredness, nausea, dark urine, pale stools, or yellow eyes. Bring a complete list of medicines and supplements. If hepatitis C is confirmed, keep follow-up appointments and ask which tests are needed before, during, and after treatment.

Seek urgent help for confusion, vomiting blood, black stools, severe abdominal swelling, or rapidly worsening yellow skin or eyes. These signs can reflect serious liver dysfunction and require prompt assessment.
