When Is a Liver Function Test Recommended for Alcohol Use Disorder?

A liver function test is a group of blood measurements that can give clues about liver irritation, bile flow, and the liver’s ability to make important proteins. Results are interpreted with symptoms, alcohol history, examination findings, medicines, and other tests. A result outside the usual range does not by itself prove the cause, and a normal result does not rule out every liver problem.

Tell the clinician how much and how often you drink, when you last drank, and whether you have withdrawal symptoms when you stop. Include prescription medicines, painkillers, supplements, and previous liver conditions. Do not stop heavy alcohol use suddenly without medical advice if withdrawal is possible; a supervised plan can reduce danger. Ask how results will guide follow-up and support for reducing or stopping alcohol.

Seek emergency help for vomiting blood, black stools, severe confusion, fainting, a seizure, yellow skin with marked illness, severe abdominal swelling, or difficulty breathing. If you are reducing heavy alcohol use, shaking, sweating, agitation, hallucinations, or seizures require urgent assessment because withdrawal can become dangerous.

Ask which liver tests are being ordered, whether imaging or repeat blood work is needed, and what each result means for your care. Ask about withdrawal support, counselling, medicines for alcohol use disorder, and symptoms that should trigger immediate review.
