When is laser toning recommended for acanthosis nigricans?

Acanthosis nigricans creates darker, thicker, velvety skin, often in the neck, underarms, groin or other folds. It can be associated with insulin resistance, hormonal conditions, medicines or inherited patterns. Laser toning addresses appearance rather than the reason the skin changed. Irritated, inflamed or recently tanned skin may be more vulnerable to unwanted colour changes after energy-based treatment.

Arrange a medical assessment for a new or spreading velvety patch, particularly when it appears in several folds or comes with other health changes. Discuss management of any identified underlying issue and avoid harsh scrubbing or bleaching products, which can worsen irritation. If laser toning remains appropriate, share your skin tone, tanning history, medicines and prior pigment reactions, then follow the preparation and aftercare plan.

Seek prompt medical review when dark, thickened skin develops suddenly, spreads quickly, affects the mouth or other unusual sites, or appears with unexplained weight change or other new symptoms. After a session, report blistering, severe burning, increasing swelling or a lasting lighter or darker patch.
