When is laser hair removal recommended for keratosis pilaris?

Keratosis pilaris causes small rough bumps around hair follicles, commonly on the upper arms, thighs, cheeks or buttocks. The roughness comes from keratin plugging the follicle. Laser hair removal targets the hair-producing follicle and may reduce hair growth, but it does not remove the keratin plugs that create the typical texture. Active redness, inflamed spots or recently irritated skin can make treatment less suitable.

Have a clinician confirm that the bumps are keratosis pilaris before choosing a device. Discuss whether the main goal is smoother texture, less visible hair, or fewer shaving-related problems. Gentle moisturising and a prescribed keratolytic plan may be more relevant to the bumps. Do not laser over sunburned or broken skin, and follow instructions about shaving, sun exposure and products that can irritate the area.

Seek review if the bumps become painful, pus-filled, rapidly widespread, intensely itchy or unlike your usual pattern. After a session, report blistering, persistent burning, crusting or a new dark or pale patch. A different follicle condition or an infection may need treatment before cosmetic procedures continue.
